In Safety, we provide a full consultancy service. Through research, data analysis, diagnosis, intervention and review we can help our clients plan, deliver and assess a long term culture change programme. Since 1996, we have been creating unique HSE workshops and programmes. We are very proud of our partnerships in safety, including our work alongside Step Change, OPITO, and IOSH.
We operate in a wide range of industries, including oil & gas, construction, nuclear, road, rail, airports, distilleries, facilities management, shipping and local government.
We use a range of behaviour-based and research-based techniques, with a focus on understanding the psychology of at risk behaviours.
All our plays and workshops focus on behaviour and consider the impact of human factors on safety, lasting from 45 mins to a full day or more. In using a variety of methods to demonstrate & highlight the behaviours & consequences, we can take our audience to the heart of an issue quickly and effectively.
We are interested in all aspects of behavioural or behaviour-based safety training and in sharing good practice wherever possible – from complacency to dynamic risk assessment, from frontline intervention to leadership behaviours, from personal responsibility & accountability to safety culture.
The structure and dynamic of any programme can be tailored precisely to your needs.
AKT worked closely with our client to produce a simulation/workshop event which examined not only their understanding of proper emergency procedures, but also the factors which affect human behaviours in times of great stress.
‘Exercise Willow’ was an Emergency Response simulation which gave our client the opportunity to observe, in real time, events which could have involved any one of them as Factory Controllers, Control Room Operators, Senior Managers or Emergency Planning Managers in a Site Emergency Control Centre, and to consider answers to the questions ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ and ‘How much worse can it get?’.
Following on from that was a real time Gold Command simulated meeting, involving the Chief of Police and representatives from various Government departments and the local Council. Our client’s participants then had to work with them to determine, strategically, what the best course of action was, all the while dealing with escalation injects which were being introduced every 5 minutes.
After all that, they then had to participate in a Press Conference and account for their actions and the subsequent outcomes.
‘It really brought to life the challenges faced in horrendously difficult situations. I have never seen this approach before and I found it much more engaging and enjoyable than a typical class room session. It was a fantastic day and I believe others in the business would benefit… A unique and hugely impactful approach… one of the best training programmes I have attended’’

“…as close to the real Gold Command as I’ve ever seen.’

“Exercise Willow’ was my favourite part. I was amazed how the actors were so well versed in our processes and language. From my perspective it was some of the most effective EP training that I have attended in 36 years of nuclear EP participation.”
